The Greenspan Blues
(all numbers are in 00's)

by Earl Coleman

The Dow went up to 85, hurrah, hurrah,
And you were the smartest man alive, hurrah, hurrah,
Then you hit the brake cause you lost your nerve
And some say you've fallen behind the curve
And we all felt the lash
Oh, Alan we hardly knew ya.

The market shot up to 91, hurrah, hurrah,
And the folks on Main Street joined the fun, hurrah, hurrah,
But you closed the window and locked the door
And stopped us from partying any more
And we're all strapped for cash
Oh, Alan we hardly knew ya.

Well the market jumped to 99 hurrah, hurrah,
And along came the dot coms just in time, hurrah, hurrah
And you got alarmed and refused to dance
And spoke of our stupid exuberance
Now we're all in the dumps
Oh, Alan we hardly knew ya.

So the market then raced to 106, hurrah, hurrah
And barbers would whisper their latest picks, hurrah, hurrah,
But you turned on the folks in Peoria
and said they were blind with euphoria
And we all took our lumps
Oh, Alan we hardly knew ya.

When NASDAQ zoomed to 48, hurrah, hurrah,
We thought we had reached the Pearly Gate, hurrah, hurrah,
But instead you believed that we'd gone to hell
And battened a cap on our only well
and we've lost all we had
Oh, Alan we hardly knew ya.

Now NASDAQ"S down to a low 19, harroo, harroo,
And the public's fed up with the losses they've seen, harroo, harroo,
So you cut the rates and you've cut again
But you've let the animal out of the pen
And the whole world's gone bad
Oh, Alan what happened to ya?
